Almost all of us have had some form of symptom of poor digestion during our lives, what’s important is that we do not ignore these signs that our body is giving to us and turn that acute sign into a chronic problem. When some of the basic ones occur, such as gas, bloating, belching, constipation or diarrhea, we should take notice and review the previous 24 hours to see if there is something in particular that we have consumed or done that could be causing it. Did we eat something new or eat at a new place? Did we eat too quickly or not consume enough water? Are we ensuring that what we are eating is nutritionally dense?
A common saying is: “You are what you eat”, but in reality it should be: “You are what you absorb”. You could be eating all of the right things, but if your digestion is not working optimally then it could be all for naught. Digestion begins in the mouth and continues all the way through the stomach, intestinal tract and colon. Each step of the way is important and neglecting one stage and offset the rest. If we don’t take the time to chew properly, then the amylase in our mouth does not have time to properly break down the starches and carbohydrates. If we drink too much liquid with our meal, then the hydrochloric acid (HCl) in our stomach becomes dilute and cannot work on the proteins. If we don’t practice proper food combining, then the different digestion times of the foods can affect how other foods are being broken down and absorbed. If we consume foods that we have intolerance to, our intestinal tract will protect itself from them and reduce absorption of everything. If we do not ensure we are consuming enough good fats and fibre, we can affect how well our colon functions.

Reducing and avoiding all of the symptoms listed earlier along with many others are not really a difficult task. Taking some of the following steps can make a big difference into how well your body digests all that you put into it.
Tips on how to optimize your digestion:
✔ Proper chewing. Focusing on the first step is crucial. In today’s world, we are quite frequently eating on the run and this is one of the biggest root causes for a lot of our health issues. Meditative eating is a great practice, in which you take the time to fully masticate your food and breathe in between bites.
✔ Ensuring proper HCl levels. If you suffer from acid reflux or frequent belching after and between meals, have your HCl level checked. A high number of people do not produce enough acid in their stomach and therefore show symptoms similar to the less common overproduction of HCl.
✔ Clean eating. Reducing the amount of nutrient void foods such as processed, fast foods, refined foods (like white sugar, white bread, white rice) and getting vegetables from a monoculture (growing a single vegetable crop in the same field repeatedly, thereby removing all nutrients from the soil that the crop requires).
✔ Avoiding allergens. Speaking with a nutritionist to determine if you have intolerance to any specific foods and how to eliminate them from your diet.
✔ Keep a food journal. This is a perfect way to be able to listen well to the signs your body is giving you. Whenever you notice that your digestive system is off, you can refer back to what may be different in the past 12 to 36 hours and take note for the next time to see if something similar occurs.
✔ Get adjusted. Sometimes we have already done all of the things listed above, but we are still having symptoms. It could be a subluxation that needs to be removed to allow our nervous system to function properly and give the correct commands.
✔ Supplementation. In cases of underactive stomach, using a digestive enzyme will help during meals. Probiotics are very important to proper digestion along with ensuring appropriate levels of Omega-3.
